But how can you\u00a0leverage your data treasure trove? Here we will go through\u00a04 steps to improve your data analysis process.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#1:\u00a0<\/strong>Understand the relationship between quantitative and qualitative research and analysis<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>You\u2019re likely to hear \u201cqualitative\u201d and \u201cquantitative\u201d any time big data is being discussed. But what do those terms actually mean? And how are they interconnected? How will the answers you find during\u00a0<em>qualitative\u00a0<\/em>research allow you to be more informed in your\u00a0<em>quantitative\u00a0<\/em>research?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Qualitative Research:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Type<\/u>: an adaptable way to informally collect information and develop preliminary hypotheses<\/li>\n<li><u>Method<\/u>: small sample sizes, such as focus groups, individual interviews, and observing customers interact with your product or service<\/li>\n<li><u>When to use<\/u>: at the start of your data hunt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Quantitative Research:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Type<\/u>: a means for sampling larger populations and providing measurable, definitive data that can be transformed, converted, interpreted and ultimately analysed.<\/li>\n<li><u>Method<\/u>: surveys\/polls, interviews and longitudinal studies (i.e. systematic and repeated observations over certain periods of time).<\/li>\n<li><u>When to use<\/u>: once you\u2019ve done some qualitative soul searching.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>#2 :\u00a0<\/strong>Ensure your data quality and the right data<\/h3>\n<p>According to a September 2017 Harvard Business Review survey, on average, 47% of newly created data records have at least one critical error. In fact,\u00a0Gartner research indicates\u00a0that the \u201caverage financial impact of poor data quality on organisations is $9.7 million per year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To obtain accurate data analysis, no matter your data is structured or unstructured or your data is on-premises or in the cloud, it needs to be trusted.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure trustworthy data, you can leverage a range of\u00a0data quality and data management solutions.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, you also need to think about what \u201ctype\u201d of data will help? In other words,\u00a0<em>what\u00a0<\/em>are you measuring and\u00a0<em>how\u00a0<\/em>are you measuring it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Small data<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u2013 how things are<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is manageable in size, may not change very often, and exists in structured forms, such as in a CRM program or bookkeeping software<\/li>\n<li>While \u201cbig data\u201d is all the rage, small data shouldn\u2019t be ignored as it\u2019s likely that your business has been analysing the contained information in some form or another since your business launched.<\/li>\n<li>It is essential for knowing your customers and understanding your company\u2019s overall financial health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Big data \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>how things\u00a0<em>could be<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most likely, you can\u2019t easily structure this information as it is dynamic and constantly changing.<\/li>\n<li>It may be what your customers say about you on social media, the content of your call center reps\u2019 conversations, how potential clients interact with your booth at trade shows or how receptive an audience is to your keynote speech.<\/li>\n<li>The sheer amount of information available can make organising and analysing it unwieldy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What type of analysis will provide you with the clearest solutions? Do you want\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Descriptive\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 what\u2019s happened in the past;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Predictive\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 what you predict will happen in the future;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prescriptive\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 used to create recommendations; and\/or<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automated\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 automating the decision making process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>#3:\u00a0<\/strong>Humanise your data<\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve tapped into your data, you may find the results to be overly abstract. During this phase it helps to remember that, ultimately, your clients and customers are people first, data points second. Put another way\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What have you discovered about the individuals behind the data?<\/li>\n<li>What have you learned about your customers\u2019 pain points, needs and and motivations?<\/li>\n<li>What do you now know about your clients\u2019 biggest hopes, dreams and aspirations?<\/li>\n<li>What have you uncovered about your clients\u2019 decision-making processes?<\/li>\n<li>What keeps them up at night?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can you then circle back to how the answers to those questions enhance your company\u2019s core values, mission and message?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#4:\u00a0<\/strong>Visualise your data<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>You may find that jumping into the \u201chumanisation\u201d process is simply not possible with the volume of information you\u2019re presented with.
